I leave the heating on all the time because it uses less energy than it does if I set on-off times. This is because it uses less energy to keep something warm than it does to keep having to warm it up from a much lower temperature.

Or so the theory goes – and, admittedly, it does sound like it should make sense. However, real life gets in the way! The quality of insulation is key: if you have a well insulated home, not only will you lose less of the heat you have already created, it’ll take less energy to replace what has ebbed away.
The heating power of the central heating (or whatever) is also going to play a part in the calculation but, in general, the end result will be the same: the less time you have the heating on, the less money you end up paying out.
