Defrosting meat

Defrosting food the efficient way

When you need to defrost a chicken, some sausages or anything else, do you dig it out of the freezer, put it on a plate and then carefully leave it near the sink? If so, your fridge is going to hate you!

Something that’s frozen is, obviously, colder than something you keep in the fridge. You paid good money to get that fridge nice and chilly – and just as much money getting the chicken to -20oC so why not ‘donate’ the cold from the frozen item to the cool of the fridge?

Put the item on a plate or whatever to catch any condensation and defrost it in the fridge. Sure, it’ll take longer (that’s about planning – and saving energy usually needs a little planning) and, as the food defrosts, it’ll act as a ‘cold pack’ for the fridge and reduce the number of times it needs to fire up its own chiller system.

Good practice is to put uncooked meats below things like open packs of cooked food, cheese and so on – because no one wants ‘raw chicken juice’ as a dressing for their ham sandwich!
