Cool a warm house in summer

Opening the loft hatch will help cool the house on a hot day

Bit of an odd one for a site dedicated to saving energy: Deliberately losing heat? However, it’s something Granny suggested would help regulate the home temperature and, well, we better give it the ECOitis treatment!

There’s some pretty sound science at play here: Heat rises. Allowing warm air to escape from the upstairs landing means cooler air has to be drawn in below it and this means even cooler air has to come in at ground level.

Granted, if we’re fighting near 30oC like we did in the summer of 2022, nothing will feel like it’s making any difference at all – but when you’ve tried all the usual tricks (closing the curtains on the sunny side of the house, open all the windows and internal doors to promote airflow) then it might just give you an edge! Also, unlike the downstairs windows, it’s perfectly safe to leave the loft hatch open all night if you want to.

Nice one Granny!
