Someone closing a door

Keep doors closed

Blindingly obvious, this, but surprisingly not something that’s used anything like as much as it should be: you have balanced the heating so the living room is warm but the bedrooms and kitchen areas are cooler – and then leave the doors wide open!

Of course, we’re not suggesting we all live like a prison where each and every door is opened and closed for each movement (although….) but controlling the heat in some rooms means stopping it from going places you don’t want it so it makes sense to keep doors closed between different ‘heat zones’ if you can.

Get into the habit. You’ll feel the difference when you come back into the living room – and your heating bill should drop, too.

If you find condensation is a problem (most likely in rooms like the kitchen or bathroom) then open a window for an hour or two in the effected room and see if that fixes the issue. After all, when you left the doors open, all that damp air was being carried into the rest of the house which wasn’t that good for you to start with!
